Membership FAQs

How do I become a member of BJ?

Thank you for inquiring about becoming a member! We are delighted to welcome you to our congregation. Please contact Matthew Davey, Membership Services Manager, or email to schedule a time to learn more about joining our community.

Our membership team will follow up with a unique link to your membership registration form. (For security reasons, we cannot embed this form on our website.) We also encourage you to explore our information for new members.

How do I renew my membership?

Click here for information on this year’s renewal process. Current members were sent personalized emails containing renewal forms beginning in mid-June. Check your inbox for messages from If you can’t find it, email us or call 212-787-7600 x302.

How much does membership cost?

We use a sliding scale dues plan which allows members to pay their dues based on their household income.

Types of Membership

The membership year is from July 1 through June 30. You can choose one of the following membership categories:

  • Individual: Single member (with no children who live with you).
  • Family: Married couple or two individuals living in a partnered relationship, with or without children; single parents with children living at home. Family membership includes children 23 years and under.
  • Full-Time Student: Individuals pursuing an undergraduate or post-graduate degree.
  • Young Adult: First-time members aged 20-35.
  • BJ Friend: BJ Friend membership provides access to our livestreams and members-only virtual programming. BJ Friend membership does not include admission to High Holy Days services, but does allow you to purchase entrance cards for your household. BJ Friend membership is perfect for those who already support one or more shuls, or for those living outside New York City.

Sliding Scale Membership Dues

July 1, 2020–June 30, 2021

Our sliding scale dues structure allows for significant flexibility, while also helping to ensure the financial health and sustainability of our community. Members pay dues based on their household income, found in the sliding scale plan below. You will not be asked to provide financial documentation of your income; we simply request that each member pledge honestly.

If you are having financial difficulties this year, please do not hesitate to contact the Membership Department to discuss dues or payment plans. No one will be denied membership because of financial circumstances. All financial information is confidential. If you join after October 31, dues are prorated each quarter (except for the BJ Friend membership).

Renewing members who joined BJ at this rate pay dues in $180 increments for the first three years, or until age 35. If you are in a comfortable financial position, we encourage you to pay the sliding scale dues above.

Year 2 (Renewing members who joined last year) $360 $540
Year 3 (Renewing members) $540 $720

Security Fee

BJ has taken significant steps to increase security in recent years. In the past year, our enhanced security costs were over $350,000. In light of recent events throughout the country, we are asking members to pay an annual security fee of between $18 and $180 (based on reported income) to fund additional improvements including enhancing the level of security provided by our security firm.

Can I pay my dues in installments?

Yes! You can pay in monthly or quarterly installments. For more information about payment plans, please contact Matthew Davey.

How do I pay my open balance online?

Please use this form for payment of open balances on your household account. Please make sure that you have already completed your membership renewal form prior to submitting payment for your membership dues.

I am in a difficult financial position and cannot meet my designated level of dues. What should I do?

Finances are never a barrier to participating in the BJ community. No one will be turned away for financial considerations. Payment plans and adjusted contributions are available. Please contact Membership to discuss your situation.

I am not a member. Can I purchase an entrance card to the High Holy Days?

Seating at our High Holy Days services is limited; therefore entrance cards are issued only to members and their guests. We encourage you to become a member to ensure entry to High Holy Days services.

Our livestreams are available to the public at no cost.

When do I need to submit my membership application in order to receive High Holy Days entrance cards?

Membership applications are available in early June and should be submitted as soon as possible. The specific deadlines for submission in order to obtain High Holy Days entrance cards differ each calendar year. We encourage members to renew sooner rather than later to ensure prompt access to our programming.

How many High Holy Days entrance cards do I get with my membership?

Those with individual memberships receive one entrance card. Those with family memberships receive two adult entrance cards and youth cards for any members of the household 23 years of age and younger. Additional entrance cards can be purchased for your guests.

BJ Friend membership does not include admission to High Holy Days services, but does allow you to purchase entrance cards for your household.
