In honor of Israel’s 75th anniversary and on the fifth yahrzeit of one of the major figures in the constellation of world-class Israeli writers, we’ll be discussing Aharon Appelfeld’s novel, Suddenly, Love. A poignant, heartbreaking work, it is the story of a lonely older man and his young caretaker, who transform each other’s lives in ways they could not have imagined. Writing in the New York Times, Mary Gordon described the book as “a brilliantly hybrid creature: It has the real-life detail of the traditional novel, but it also makes us travel into the worlds of folk tales and magic, prayers and dreams.”
