Ma’oz-Tzur – Traditional

Words: Mordekhai (12-13th c.)
Music: Traditional

Ma’oz-Tzur

Words: Mordekhai (12-13th c.)
Music: Benedetto Marcello (17th c.)

Tikon beit tefilati, vesham toda nezabeah.
Le’et takhin matbeah, mitzar hamnabeah,
Az egmor beshir mizmor, Hanukat hamizbeah.

Rock of Ages, let our song praise Thy saving power; Thou amidst the raging foes, was our shelt’ring tower.
Furious they assailed us, but Thine arm availed us. And Thy word, broke their sword when our own strength failed us.
Children of the Maccabees, whether free or fettered. Wake the echoes of the songs, where we may be scattered.
Yours the message cheering that the time is nearing. Which will see, all men free, Tyrants disappearing.

Mi Yemalel – Traditional

Words : Traditional (English: Judith K. Eisenstein)
Music : Traditional

Shma ! Bayamim hahem bazman hazeh,
Makabi moshi’a ufode.
Uvyamenu kol am Israel, Yit-ahed yakum veyiga-el !

Who can retell the things that befell us, who can count them? In every age a hero or sage came to our aid.
Hark! At this time of year, in days of yore. Maccabees the temple did restore.
And today our people, as we dreamed, through their faith and courage are redeemed!

Sevivon – Traditional

Words : M. Kipnis
Music : Wolli Kaelter

Sevivon sov sov sov, Hanukkah hu hag tov,
Hanukkah hu hag tov, sevivon sov sov sov.
Hag simha hu la’am, nes gadol hayah sham,

Little dreydl, spin, spin, spin. Hanukkah is a day of joy.
Great was the miracle that happened there. Spin little dreydl, spin, spin, spin.

Yemei-Hahanukkah – Traditional

Words : M. Rivesman (English: E. Guthmann)
Music : Chassidic

Yemei hahanukkah, Hanukkat mikdashenu
begil uvesimha memal-im et libenu;
laila vaiom svivonenu yisov, sufganiyot nokhal bam larov.
Ha-iru, hadliku, nerot Hanukka rabim !
al hanisim ve’al hanifla-ot, asher holelu hamakabim !

בְּגִיל וּבְשִׂמְחָה מְמַלְּאִים אֶת לִבֵּנוּ;

O Hanukkah, O Hanukkah, come light the menorah, let’s have party, we’ll all dance the hora.
Gather round the table, we’ll give you a treat, s’vivonim to play, with levivot to eat.
And while we are playing, the candles are burning low.
One for each night they shed a sweet light to remind us of days long ago.

Dreydl

Words : S. E. Goldfarb & S. S. Grossman
Music : S. E. Goldfarb & S. S. Grossman

I have a little dreydl, I made it out of clay.
And when it’s dry and ready, then dreydl I will play.
O dreydl dreydl dreydl, I made it out of clay.
O dreydl dreydl dreydl, now dreydl I shall play.

It has a lovely body, with leg so short and thin.
And when it is all tired, it drops and then I win.
O dreydl dreydl dreydl, with leg so short and thin.
O dreydl dreydl dreydl, it drops and then I win.

My dreydl’s always playful, it loves to dance and spin.
A happy game of dreydl come play now let’s begin.
O dreydl dreydl dreydl, it loves to dance and spin.
O dreydl dreydl dreydl, come play now let’s begin.

Yah, take back the waiting dove who tearfully longs for you.
And the dove will rejoice in You, her King, throughout the eight days of Hanukkah.

Give thanks to the strongest of the strong, to the most awesome of all
God rescued the Hasmoneans’ offspring and struck the enemy’s hand.

Your people will sing songs and hymns more precious than gold
As they light the candles for the eight nights of Hanukkah.

All hearts shall seek God, for all the good things he has done for us.
Children and parents, rejoice together in our faith, which is as endless as the sea.

God will renew our days and set in motion our enemies’ destruction.
God will send you help from God’s sanctuary and fortitude from Zion.
