Race and Us
Examining the Role of Race in Jewish Identity, Jewish Community, and American Society
This initiative will educate us: on the historical and present-day realities of race in the Jewish community and in this country, and on what we can do to address the interconnected dangers of antisemitism and racism.
It will inspire us: to honor the growing diversity at BJ and in the wider Jewish community, and to celebrate the richness that such diversity brings to our collective Jewish lives.
And it will challenge us: to do the internal work that will allow us to build a true culture of belonging at BJ, and take seriously our responsibility to join the widening national conversation about race in America.
Public Lecture 3: Dr. Cheryl Greenberg
Thursday, January 9 | Doors at 7:00PM | Sanctuary
American Jews have long shown a strong commitment to social justice and civil rights. But the stories we tell about our involvement in the Civil Rights movement, and our relations with African American communities are more complicated than we often admit: racism, class distinctions, and more have created rifts and ill will over the decades. Moreover, hidden in the false dichotomy between Jews and African Americans are Jews of color, who straddle the divide, often uncomfortably and invisibly. In this lecture we’ll explore how a more honest review of history and a more inclusive sense of Jewish identity might allow us to build and rebuild the relationships that will help strengthen the social fabric of this country.
Dr. Cheryl Greenberg is the Paul E. Raether Distinguished Professor of History at Trinity College in Hartford, CT. Her research focuses on 20th century African American history, Black-Jewish relations, race and ethnicity, and civil rights and social movements. She is the author of numerous publications, including Troubling the Waters: Black-Jewish Relations in the American Century, Princeton University Press.
