In this time of tremendous unsettledness, we turn to the luminous writing and deep insight of the late Amos Oz. In Between Friends, winner of the National Jewish Book Award, Oz takes us back to a fictional kibbutz in the 1950s and explores the tensions and possibilities at the intersection of the individual and the collective. In an interview about the book, Oz told the Israeli newspaper Haaretz that the kibbutz is “the ultimate university of human nature.” These stories are both particular in their exploration of the complexities and tensions of kibbutz life and universal in their depiction of the human psyche.
