Elevating Elul: Spiritual Preparation for the High Holy Days

Join us during the month of Elul for a multi-pathway and multi-access journey toward the Yamim Nora’im. We will prepare for the High Holy Days spiritually, intellectually, mindfully, musically, and every way in between. From Selihot to Ne’ilah: Navigating the High Holy Days

Tuesdays: September 6, 13, 20

Ever wondered why we throw breadcrumbs in the Hudson, or get up early for Selihot? Why do we get down on the ground to pray on Rosh Hashanah? Join Marshall T. Meyer Rabbinic Fellows Aaron Leven and Alissa Platcow for a three-part overview of High Holy Day services and rituals, as well as an exploration of their deeper spiritual meaning.

In all Honesty: An Encounter with the Mahzor

Wednesdays: September 7, 14, 21

The liturgy of Yamim Nora’im (High Holy Days) is both our deepest guide and a profound challenge during this season of transformation. Join Rabbis Roly Matalon and Felicia Sol in this three-part series to encounter these prayers in all their complexity and find an authentic pathway forward.

Cultivating Compassion in a Time of Teshuvah

Sundays: September 11, 18

Join Rabbi Shuli Passow and Rabbi Marc Margolius (Institute for Jewish Spirituality) in a contemplative journey in cultivating inward and outward compassion to fuel the spiritual work of teshuvah (returning to our best selves). Balancing learning, guided and silent meditation, we will invite contemplative spiritual practice to root and guide us toward the High Holy Days. No previous experience with meditation or formal Jewish learning is necessary.

Homeward Bound: An Experience of Sephardic Selihot

Thursdays: September 15, 22, 29

Led by Rabbi Roly Matalon and Music Director Dan Nadel, this three-part experience features Sephardic and Mizrahi melodies and the exquisite liturgical poetry of Selihot. This annual tradition of deep reflection and prayer engages us in the spiritual journey of Teshuvah leading to the High Holy Days.

Ya’aleh Koleinu: Melodies of the High Holy Days

Monday, September 19

Preparing for your first High Holy Days with BJ? Or simply looking to refresh your soul with the melodies of the season? Join Hazzan Ari Priven as we prepare for the Yamim Nora’im by singing new and old melodies that you’ll hear throughout the High Holy Days at BJ.
