BJ Reads at P.S. 166

A Unique Literacy Program for Elementary School Students

Books. Photo: Denise WaxmanVolunteers have been paired as reading partners with students at P.S. 166 on 89th Street for almost 20 years. BJ Reads offers volunteers the opportunity to make a tangible difference in the lives of elementary school children who are not yet reading at grade level or need a little extra support throughout the year. With the steady presence and enthusiasm of our volunteers, our partner’s reading and comprehension skills flourish over the course of the year.

Leadership Team

The BJ Reads volunteer co-chairs are longtime BJ Members Ellen Schecter and Sandy Davidson. Between them they have decades of teaching and literacy experience and have created a wonderful approach to learning for volunteers and their reading partners.

Needed: Individuals to read with a child throughout the school year. Minimum commitment is one 1-hour session on Monday or Wednesday morning October through May, specific times TBA for the upcoming year.
