Jewish Stories of Love and Marriage: Folktales, Legends and Letters – co-authored by Sandy Eisenberg Sasso and Peninnah Schram – has just been published by Rowman & Littlefield. Peninnah is a long-time member of BJ and Rabbi Sandy Sasso and her husband, Rabbi Dennis Sasso, accompany groups from their Indianapolis synagogue to attend BJ services annually.
This book is in five sections: Biblical and Rabbinic love stories; Folktales of love; Historic love letters; Contemporary love stories; and How to Write Your Own Love Story.
In the Contemporary love stories, there are 3 stories written by members or former members of BJ: Dr. Jack and Judy Stern; Daniel Barash and Mark Jacobs (who met at BJ); and Sonia Gordon-Walinsky and Hazzan Mordechai Schram (who also met at BJ). Sonia, a Jewish artist, developed their graphic love story through micrographic verses from the Hakafot.
The book, which has received rave reviews in Publishers Weekly and Booklist, is available at WEST SIDE JUDAICA (Broadway near 89th Street). To view the publisher’s flyer and dicount code, click here.
