Tzedakah - Giving to BJ
BJ is a synagogue that stands for something-for a Judaism that is personally meaningful and relevant. But it is more than that. BJ also stands for the proposition that the synagogue must be relevant and meaningful not just to each of us as individuals but to the larger Jewish world and to the world at large.
The spirit of BJ expresses itself through the voluminous day-to-day activities of our community, and the voluminous day-to-day activities of the community express the spirit of BJ. Take prayer as just one example. Prayer at BJ is a powerful experience. But that power depends on a community that studies together, cares for one another, and works together for justice and peace. What, then, has to exist at BJ for over 2000 people to pray here each week with such intention, connection, and joy? A complex infrastructure including three rabbis, a hazzan, nine musicians, scholars-in-residence, maintenance of the 88th Street building, rent on 86th Street, for two additional locations for High Holy Day services, services for our children and rent for our Hebrew School. And, just as important: a homeless shelter, a lunch program, members organized to visit the sick and comfort mourners, teachers for our children, classes for adults, and much, much more.
How much does it cost to support this infrastructure? This year, $6 million dollars. Membership dues and money raised through the Kol Nidre Partnership annual appeal only represent two-thirds of BJ's budget. The remainder is raised through a variety of opportunities available throughout the year that exist to support the congregation and fund programs that benefit the BJ community. We are most grateful for your support.
