Executive Director's Message

Here we are in the dead of winter – yet BJ is alive and flourishing. Our panim el panim project successfully completed more than the targeted amount of 613 conversations, and the action hevra are busy at work to determine which activities, projects, and programs to undertake for these new Social Action/Social Justice initatives.

In January, we were fortunate to hear Rabbi Arthur Hertzberg speak at BJ and to welcome Project Dialogue for a challenging evening of discussion with members of different cultures and communities living in Israel. The future holds more in store – we are right around the corner from Purim and we are looking forward to our annual fundraising event, the Night of 100 Dinners, on Saturday, March 20, where we will be launching our new High Holy Day song book and CD, TekiYah.

Toward the end of 2003, BJ hosted a Synagogue 2000/B'nai Jeshurun conference with over 65 participants from 17 congregations across North America. This conference was a result of a grant awarded to us by the Righteous Persons Foundation through which a study of BJ took place over the last two years to determine the key elements that could be successfully adapted for other synagogues (please refer to "BJ: A Model for a Revitalized Synagogue Life").

We also want to welcome our new Membership Director, Belinda Lasky. Belinda has a Master's in social work, and has worked for UJA/Federation of NY as well as the University of Arizona Hillel Foundation.
