Happy Birthday To Hamidrasha!
This winter, we will be lighting more than Hanukkah candles. Our “Circle of Friends” in Israel will be gathering in a few weeks to celebrate the completion of Hamidrasha’s 20th year of activity!
At Hanukkah, we brighten the darkness with the help of small candles, ancient blessings and many songs written by Zionist pioneers in the past century. This combination is very important to us as Israelis who are exploring and deepening their Jewish roots. And so Hamidrasha has chosen the subject of Hebrew song/poetry and prayer as the topic for our birthday celebration. How is the soul expressed in song and in prayer? Can song be prayer? Is there a connection between our modern songs and traditional prayer? What is their role in increasing the light in the world?
In this spirit of prayer and song, we usher in a new decade of activity at Hamidrasha, with much hope and anticipation. Together with partners, supporters and friends like you, we look forward to continuing to “fan the flames” of Jewish renewal. In gratitude, we send you part of a beautiful poem which is sung at Hanukkah by children throughout Israel. It was written by Naomi Shemer, the famous and beloved Israeli poet, who also wrote “Jerusalem of Gold” and hundreds of other songs.
Those walking in darkness will see a great light
Those yearning for freedom will find a home
Darkness envelops the lamps
Those who have ceased in their steps are looking for miracles
Who will light the ancient candle?
Who will make the song heard?
Who will find in his heart a new small light?
In the torch of yesterday, the fire will again burn Sometimes a great miracle returns and reoccurs.
Marveling in the miracles we experience, working to kindle the flames and wishing you a bright and happy Hanukkah,
—Moti Zeira and your friends at Hamidrasha
